Take Action Now
We urgently need you to take action and call your senator
We urgently need you to take action and call your senator, but first we need to give you a little backstory.
Every year Congress proposes and approves the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which specifies the annual budget and expenditures of the United States Department of Defense.
Because this bill is sure to be considered and passed, legislators in recent years have begun attaching provisions unrelated to the Defense Department to force through other bills that might otherwise never get voted on.
Well, this year one of the provisions that made it into the House bill is a rider that prohibits listing the greater sage-grouse as an endangered species for 10 years.
This is an outrageous move that not only threatens the survival of the greater sage-grouse but could put our entire military budget at risk.
In short, Congress is so beholden to special interest lobbyists that they are willing to interfere with military funding to keep their seats.
The Senate is expected to take up the NDAA in June and will reconcile their bill with the House bill. This is where you come in. We need to contact our senators and express our strong opposition to including the sage-grouse rider in the conference process.
Will you call your Senator RIGHT NOW to tell them not to endanger the greater sage-grouse — or our defense budget?
It’s really easy. Just call (202) 224-3121 and follow the prompts to be connected with one of the senators in your state (you will have to repeat this process after the call so you can contact both of your senators!)
Once connected, simply read from the following script to let your Senate office know that you oppose the greater sage-grouse rider! (Feel free to go off-script if you want.)
Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME HERE] and I’m calling to urge Senator [SENATOR’S NAME] to reject the greater sage-grouse rider that the House attached to the National Defense Authorization Act. Our defense budget is far too important to be put at risk.
Thank you for taking the time for this call. I hope the senator will keep his constituents’ thoughts in mind during the conference process.
Thanks. Your action on this critically important issue means the world to us.
